What is a Core?

Certain types of auto parts can be remanufactured for future sale. It is an industry standard to charge a “core charge”. A core charge is basically a “deposit” on the portion of the part being replaced that can be remanufactured. This deposit is designed to encourage the return of the part being replaced. It is completely optional as to whether you return the part being replaced. Parts that may have a core price include brake shoes, brake master cylinders, water pumps, starters, alternators and air conditioning compressors.

Returning Cores

If you have paid a core charge for an item purchased from OEM Auto Parts and Accessories you are eligible for a core credit upon return of the old core unit. We request that you return used cores within 14 days of receipt of your new part. Your core return must be shipped back in the packaging that was used to deliver your new part. Please follow the Return process defined on the Return and Refund page. Please identify the reason for the return as a "core return." Before returning the used core, be sure to drain all fluids from the core and place it in a plastic bag to prevent leakage in transit. Our participating dealers will be happy to issue you a refund of your “core deposit”.
